Clough keen to continue progress

9 January 2014

Nigel Clough insists the hard work must continue as United return to league action at the weekend.

The Blades boss who was delighted to see his two wingers net crucial goals at Aston Villa and he admits he demands goal coring contributions from all the players.

Clough, though, is determined to build on the momentum following last week's FA Cup success, commenting "We are great believers that we must score goals from different areas, Harry (Maguire) scored twice in our first game in charge and is our joint top scorer.

"Confidence is crucial for a lot of players, especially with wingers and Ryan (Flynn) and Jamie (Murphy) are approaching the top of their games.

"But we want goals from across the park, we emphasis that to the players on a regular basis.

"We have only lost once in the last ten matches (at Walsall), so on the back of Aston Villa, we have to use that result to get back on the winning trail in the league.

"The players need to keep working hard, keep believing and if we do we will keep moving in the right direction."

Jose Baxter, along with Clough himself was nominated for the Sky Bet League One Player and Manager of the Month awards earlier in the week, the Gaffer was keen to take a backseat and heap praise on the former Everton trainee.

He said: "Jose (Baxter) certainly deserves his recognition, he scored some great goals in December, all of them were important strikes and well taken.

"We want to continue to get more out of him, but there are a lot more players than manager's so the recognition for him is more notable.

"I am pleased with our progress since we took charge, but we haven't achieved anything yet, we are still sitting just above the relegation zone."
