Boss delighted with Scottish trio

31 January 2014

Blades boss Nigel Clough, who is tipping Stefan Scougall to be a big hit at Bramall Lane, believes wingers Ryan Flynn and Jamie Murphy are starting to find their best form.

The wingers, who stole the headlines when United dumped Aston Villa out of the FA Cup earlier this month, have impressed the Blades management team with their contributions in recent weeks.

The Gaffer has revealed what he demands from his wide players, commenting: "We have given both Ryan and Jamie the freedom to go and express themselves offensively, whilst reminding them of their roles to the team defensively.

"They were excellent against Fulham, the tracking back was fantastic and when they run at defenders they are always a threat.

"Fulham pushed their full-backs right on, but both of them handled it excellently well and did their best to put get them on the back foot.

"Jamie and Ryan have been instrumental to our success of late; they will certainly continue to contribute plenty of assists and importantly goals as they have done recently if they play to their potential."

Meanwhile, Clough was encouraged by what new boy Scougall contributed in the FA Cup tie and knows he will have to utilise the diminutive midfielder wisely.

On the 21-year-old's debut, the manager added: "Stefan is good on the ball and needs to be played through the middle, similar to Jose Baxter.

"Stefan might only have a slight frame, but he is fearless and he has been kicked about in Scotland, so he will be able to handle himself in League One.

"The lad is technically an excellent footballer and will adapt his game - we have to get to work on how to get best out of him as we have done Jose. I have been very pleased with what we have seen from him already and he will only get better given time, so patience will be needed as he progresses this season."
