Nigel Clough offered no excuses after the Blades slipped to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Crewe Alexandra at Gresty Road.
Two goals in eight minutes at the end of the first-half from Chuks Aneke made United pay for a lacklustre display in Cheshire and Byron Moore's strike deep into stoppage-time cap a miserable afternoon for the Blades.
Speaking afterwards, Clough was brutally honest in his assessment of events:
"We are at a loss to where that performance came from, especially on the back of such a positive effort against Fulham. We are unbelievably disappointed to say the least.
"In the first-half, in difficult conditions, all you want to see is everyone doing the basics of their jobs properly, but it just didn't happen.
"We didn't deserve anything and the goals we have conceded are disappointing. The first one is a bit of deflection, but overall we didn't see enough from anyone on the day.
"In the second-half we had a go and if we had got a goal who knows what might happen, but you can't produce nothing in the first-half and expect to get anything from the game.
"When you are pressing for a way back into the game you are always going to be vulnerable defensively and ultimately we conceded a third in injury-time, but the game was as good as over by that point."
