Forest 0-0 U21s - report

14 February 2014

United's U21s kicked off 2014 with a point , following a goalless draw against Nottingham Forest at Wilford Road on Friday afternoon.

In a game hampered by the wet and windy conditions, goalscoring chances were at a premium at both ends, with Billy Paynter coming closest for the visitors on three occasions in the first-half.

The first sight of goal fell to the Blades, but Kieran Wallace produced a well timed, last-ditch tackle to deny Paynter a clear shot on target.

The experienced striker, who is cup-tied for Sunday's FA Cup clash with Forest, then drew a fine save from Dimitar Evtimov in the Reds goals, having burst into the penalty area.

Marcus Tudgay and Stephen McLaughin then combined for the hosts, with the latter forcing the ball home past Willis, but the offside flag came to United's rescue on the stroke of half-time.

At the other end, there was still time for Paynter to sting the palms of Evtimov after the Doncaster Rovers loanee had skipped clear of Wallace.

United had a let off after the restart when Jack Blake curled just over the bar after good interchange play with Deinmantas Petravicius.

The dreadful conditions made it difficult for both sets of players to create anymore chances and the two sides were forced to settle for a point as the referee called an end to proceedings.

Blades: Willis, Hodder, Johns, Reed, Kennedy, McGinty, Miller (Cheeseman 62), Whitehouse (Hamilton 28), Paynter, McFadzean, De Girolamo (Partodikromo H/T).
Unused: Owen
