Special tribute

2 December 2014

The Blades have invited the parents of England international cricketer and Blades fan Joe Root to Bramall Lane for the Sky Bet League One encounter with MK Dons to help with a special tribute.

Matt and Helen Root will bring one of Joe's bats and caps to the game as part of the tribute to Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes, who lost his life playing the game he loved last week.

Players and fans of the game have been showing their respect for the batsman with the #putoutyourbats campaign.

Mainly on Twitter, cricket lovers have been putting up images of bats in a variety of locations, some accompanied by hand-written messages of condolence.

Root is currently on tour in Sri Lanka with England, but his parents will hand over the bat and cap to Blades legend and former professional cricketer Ted Hemsley to place on the player's and United's behalf, just before kick-off, on the pitch at Bramall Lane, which, of course, is the original home of Yorkshire County Cricket Club.
