Gaffer on Boxing Day clash

24 December 2014

Nigel Clough says football on Boxing Day still holds a special place in the hearts of football fans up and down the country, but even more so when your team is victorious.

Speaking ahead of United festive clash at Port Vale on Friday, Clough remarked: "Boxing Day is a great day in the football calendar and even better if you can get three points.

"It is a shame our fixture hasn't got a local element to it for all those that will be travelling but I am sure, as always, we will take a big following to Vale Park.

"It is a big a game for us, but a difficult proposition. We had a very good win there at the end of last season courtesy of two late goals and we'll happily take the same again this time."

On the game itself, the Gaffer added: "Robert Page has taken over there and started well, they had a good win at Crawley Town last Saturday, so they will enter the game full of confidence.

"Like a lot of teams in this division it will be their biggest game of the season when we come to town and they will be determined to get a good result.

"Port Vale are always a very strong side at home, it is a big pitch at Vale Park, so we'll have to adapt quickly and start well."
