With a number of second year scholars out on-loan experiencing senior football with local non-league clubs, it was a youthful Blades side that was defeated by Barnsley at Oakwell Academy.
Barnsley, who fully deserved the win, scored once in each half to take the spoils, despite a spirited showing from United's youngsters.
With the game still goalless Adebowale had a good chance with a header from a set-piece, whilst Brooks had a sight of goal following a reverse pass from Calvert-Lewin.
But in the 32nd minute the home side took the lead from the penalty spot after goalkeeper Ramsdale was adjudged to have brought down the onrushing striker in the penalty area.
In an end-to-end game which saw the Tykes have numerous chances to double their lead, it was the Blades and Calvert-Lewin who missed a golden chance to restore parity with 15 minutes left to play.
United were punished for that miss moments later when Barnsley made the game safe by scoring a second from close-range, after the visiting defence failed to clear a corner.
