Gaffer's take on incident

3 April 2014

Nigel Clough praised the 'courage' referee Eddie Ilderton demonstrated in overturning the penalty he awarded to Brentford on Tuesday night.

The main talking point of the midweek encounter with the promotion-chasing Bees came following Kieron Freeman's challenge on Marcello Trotta.

Ilderton initially pointed to the spot and red-carded the Blades loanee, before reversing both decisions after a lengthy discussions with one of his assistants.

Those actions drew praise from the Blades boss, who remarked: "It was an awful square pass from Kieron Freeman in the first place and that meant he had to make a last-ditch tackle.

"It was clear Kieron got the ball. The referee has made a bad decision , but he deserves a lot of credit for going across and talking to the assistant referee.

"In the end, the referee has reversed the decision and reached the correct outcome.

"He has to be commended for changing his mind. Once you have shown the red card you have to be brave and show courage to go back and admit an error."
