Matt Hill felt he was fouled in the build-up to Preston's winning goal at Bramall Lane on Saturday, a decision that he believes typifies United's start to the League One season.
Giving his take on the incident between himself and North End's Kevin Davies, Hill remarked: "I went to nick the ball off Kevin and he clipped my heels, I tried to stay on my feet but I couldn't keep my balance and unfortunately they scored from the subsequent cutback.
"Perhaps, in hindsight, I should have just fallen to the floor straight away, my honesty probably cost us the decision going in our favour, which is massively frustrating.
"It seems to be the story of our season - we dominate, don't take our chances and then a mistake or bad decisions costs us the game at the other end."
Looking ahead, the experienced campaigner added: "It is soul destroying at the moment because we are so near, yet so far, but we have to lick our wounds quickly and look forward to a trip to Wolves at the weekend.
"We will have to go to there, grit our teeth and really try and ground out a positive result."
