U18s 2-0 Barnsley - report

4 November 2013

United's U18s returned to league action with a victory, a goal in each half securing a South Yorkshire derby victory at the Redtooth Academy.

Following the penalty shoot-out victory over Oldham Athletic in the FA Youth Cup three days earlier, Academy coach Travis Binnion made changes with only four who started the Boundary Park tie kicking off this encounter against Barnsley.

The Blades started the game really well with Wright and Lewin causing Barnsley to make errors in their play, which allowed Whiteman and Ishmail to regain control and work towards goal. The home side won a number of early corners, whilst chances fell to Lewin and Wright.

Barnsley had to wait until the 20-minute mark to secure their first real chance but goalkeeper Owen was quickly off his line to snuff out the danger and Whiteman went close before the Blades grabbed the lead on 36 minutes. Coustrain received from Scarisbrick, he attracted two defenders before excellently sliding in WRIGHT, who timed his run well to stay onside and he made no mistake lifting the ball over the visiting goalkeeper for his sixth goal in eight starts.

Further Blades chances followed before and after the break, the best of which seeing Wright shoot instead of laying off for Lewin, whilst Binnion introduced 15-year-old Peace-McDonald and striker Eyre, who was back in contention after a four-week injury lay-off.

The Blades were forced to soak up a spell of pressure with Scarisbrick and Cheeseman making excellent last ditch blocks and clearances, before a second goal on 81 minutes secured the points. Whiteman's corner found Lewin, who's excellent header was only parried into the path of Scarisbrick, who forced home.

Coach Binnion said afterwards: "This performance capped a positive week, there were some disappointed players having not been in the line-up for the FA Youth Cup, but we are maturing as a group and there were some excellent performances in what was a really impressive and dominant display."

Blades: Owen, Scarisbrick, Ptak, Ishmail, Banton (Peace-McDonald 50), Cheeseman, Heh, Whiteman, Wright (Koroma 80), Lewin, Coustrain (Eyre 65).
Unused: Eastwood, Fixter.
