Squad assessment

7 November 2013

"Let's get through the weekend and re-assess the shape of the squad next week," commented Nigel Clough when questioned by the media on the strength of the resources available to him.

In his first fortnight at S2, Clough has brought in Aidy White, on loan from Leeds, and extended the temporary spell of Cardiff's Simon Lappin until the New Year.

"It is unlikely there will be any business before the weekend because people aren't keen on letting players out with permission to play in the FA Cup, as we know with Aidy at the moment," added the Blades chief.

"We will see how it goes, but we have got a good nucleus of players within the squad, everyone has and will continue to be given the chance to impress.

"People like George (Long) and Harry (Maguire), given their young age, are great examples of what can be achieved at this club.

"Both lads are still at a tender age but given the opportunity they have established themselves as first-team regulars.

"They have racked up a lot of first-team appearances and having witnessed the integration of youth into the first-team at Derby, it is very heartening to see it in progress here already."
