Blades officials enjoy Turkish delight

18 November 2013

A number of Blades directors and vice-presidents recently accepted an invitation to take in the derby fixture between Fenerbahce and Galatasaray in Istanbul.

Blades director Selahattin Baki set up the visit, which not only included watching the Turkish League fixture, but also meetings with the Fenerbahce chairman, Aziz Yıldırım, and interviews with local TV stations.

The United contingent's presence and Sheffield's association with the birth of football created a substantial amount of publicity and two members of the Blades board, Scott McCabe and Jim Phipps, were interviewed on Turkish TV.

Following this visit, Scott McCabe said: "We not only congratulate Fenerbahce on their overwhelming performance against a tough side, but we thank Fenerbahce chairman Aziz Yildirim and his outstanding club for such a warm welcome."

Jim Phipps added: "We left Istanbul having witnessed an amazing football atmosphere and after seeing Fenerbahce achieve its 15th successive victory over a fierce competitor. We hope to build on this visit and look to our colleague, Selahattin Baki, to help us build the bridge between Fenerbahce and Sheffield United."
