Michael Doyle says United's form at Bramall Lane needs to be addressed ahead of another crack at promotion in 2013-14.
The skipper pulled no punches in his personal analysis of where United's 2012-13 campaign came up short.
He commented: "Our home form all season was a problem, we didn't win enough matches on our own patch.
"The games at the end of the season were disappointing, but it is the early games that we were drawing, against the likes of Oldham and Bury, without being disrespectful, that cost us promotion.
"Home form has to be the key; it has to be addressed by the new manager, that's one thing that we will definitely need to look at.
"We struggled to break teams down, teams were not as scared as they should have been. We've got to get back to the times when the opposition fear coming to Bramall Lane."
