Tony McMahon got his first taste of pre-season action on Monday evening and is targeting a place in David Weir's team for the league opener with Notts County next week.
The right-back missed the end of last season with an Achilles problem but has been working hard throughout the summer to return to full fitness.
He played a pre-planned 45 minutes in Monday's friendly success at Alfreton and is keen for more action.
He said: "It is nice to be back, I enjoyed the game at Alfreton and wanted to do a little more than the 45 minutes but it was probably sensible that I didn't. It was a good game, we passed and moved the ball around well and it was nice to get to know a few of the new lads.
"I've worked hard through pre-season and although I'm behind a few lads in terms of minutes on the pitch, I'm still hoping to be ready for the Notts County game.
"I began full training last week and the legs feel good. I want to be ready for the Notts County game and I'm continuing to work hard with that aim."
