Chris Morgan was pleased to see his U21s team start 2013 with a win.
In a competitive clash with Wigan Athletic at Shirecliffe on Tuesday afternoon, Danny Philliskirk settled the contest two minutes from time with a spectacular scissor kick and Morgan admitted he thought the game was destined to end in stalemate.
Speaking afterwards, the U21 coach said: "It was a really good game, played at an excellent tempo by two sets of promising youngsters.
"It was competitive throughout and it was always going to take a set-piece or something out of the blue to win it.
"Danny (Philliskirk) has terrific awareness and he demonstrated that with his finish, but I must reserve a special mention for George (Willis) who was solid throughout and he made a vital late save to preserve our lead.
"The game was nip and tuck for long periods, we had a few chances and so did Wigan, but in the end I am pleased to return to action with a victory."
