Mark Howard is set to up his rehabilitation from injury next week, when United U21s return to action with the re-arranged home fixture against Wigan Athletic.
Boss Danny Wilson confirmed that Howard is progressing well from the thigh injury he sustained at Leyton Orient in October and the former Arsenal trainee is pencilled in for an outing against the Latics at Shirecliffe.
The Gaffer said: "Mark is doing very well at the moment and has been training without any reaction to his injury for the last week or so.
"We have some U21s games coming up starting next week, he will play in those and we will take it from there."
When the extent of Howard's injury was confirmed, Wilson signed the vastly experienced Danny Coyne and the Gaffer has given the former Wales international a stopper a glowing reference.
Asked about the possibility of extending the 39-year-old's deal until the end of the season, Wilson concluded:
"What we need to do is see if Mark is fully fit and when we do we can make a decision on Danny.
"He is a great lad and a fantastic professional who is relaxed and understanding about the whole situation. He has been absolutely fantastic and a pleasure to have around the place.
"Danny has been a god send and a great help to George (Long), so to have those three available would be a real boost."
