Blades 0-2 Yeovil - report

Blades 0-2 Yeovil - match report

The Blades suffered a second consecutive home defeat to drop down the League One ladder.

Paddy Madden scored Yeovil's first ever goals against the Blades to set up the Somerset side's first ever Lane victory.

More than 20,000 Unitedites went home disappointed, despite Danny Higginbotham and Jamie Murphy making their home debuts.

Boss Wilson made one enforced change to his team with Williams replacing the injured Hill at left-back. Irish youngster Barry, another product of the Academy, was named on the bench for the first time.

Murphy continued in his role in support of Kitson with Flynn and Blackman adding attacking options from the flanks but the Blades were forced to kick towards the Kop in the first half. Despite United winning a corner in the first minute, Yeovil were gifted the game's first real chance on eight minutes. Maguire's header was short and Madden found himself in the clear but he dragged his effort wide with Long rushing off his line.

United's responses were long range efforts from Blackman and Doyle, both flew over the crossbar, whilst a quick Doyle free-kick to Flynn almost presented a chance. On 22 minutes, a McMahon free-kick failed to hit the target but he wasn't far away and caused a nervous moment for goalkeeper Stech.

Long was forced to flick over a shot from Hayter on 29 minutes and then Dolan, booked moments earlier for a foul on Kitson, failed to find the target. A number of misplaced passes ruined United's rhythm and McMahon was booked for a foul on Madden just before half-time was confirmed by the officials, but only after Hayter had failed to find the target with another effort.

Yeovil began on the offensive and were rewarded with the lead soon after the interval. The Blades failed to clear a free-kick, Webster clipped the ball to MADDEN, who used the space afforded to him to cut inside and shoot under Long and into the Kop goal.

The Blades hit back with a handful of efforts in the next ten minutes. McMahon's long ranger was just over, Kitson's header was deflected wide by Ayling and then when Murphy was denied a penalty in a melee, Kitson's shot was snuffed out.
Dawson's foul on Maguire was ideally positioned for McMahon but his free-kick struck the wall and Wilson made a change just after the hour, Ironside replacing Flynn with Murphy switching to the left.

However, a major moment of misfortune for Long handed Yeovil a second on 66 minutes. From Higginbotham's pass-back, the visitors pressed United's defence and a nervous touch from the goalkeeper allowed MADDEN to rob him and tap in to the empty net.

As United attempted to regain composure, Blackman had a shot deflected wide and Wilson threw on Cresswell for Kitson but timing was running out and clear-cut chances were minimal. Cresswell headed a corner wide and Ironside was pulled back by Burn but referee Phillips looked uninterested.

Philliskirk replaced Williams late on and in four additional minutes the Blades' luck refused to change. Maguire was booked and Yeovil managed to repel efforts from Blackman, Cresswell and Ironside all in one move and the final whistle was met by disappointment.
