U21s 2-2 Owls - report

25 February 2013

United's U21s remain with just one victory in 2013 after surrendering a two-goal advantage in Monday's derby with the Owls.

Goals from Jordan Chapell and Diego De Girolamo inside the opening 40 minutes looked to set the Blades up for victory, but Wednesday hit back to earn a share of the spoils at a cold Shirecliffe.

With Danny Wilson and Dave Jones both in attendance, it was United who made the positive start and inside a minute Ironside headed just wide at the near post after a Chapell cross. The lead, however, did arrive on 14 minutes when Wednesday could only half clear a corner and CHAPELL hammered across goal and into the bottom corner.

The visitors survived sanction following a number of hefty challenges and Ironside was denied a penalty after he was felled in the box but the referee did point to the spot on 38 minutes, this time DE GIROLAMO was pulled down by White and the teenager took responsibility for the penalty, slotting into the bottom corner and sending the goalkeeper the wrong way in the process.

Wednesday's first chance arrived on 43 minutes, Willis pushing over Hinchliffe's free-kick but the visitors netted from the resulting corner, DIESERUVWE heading home from the resulting corner.

The chances dried up in the second period until Wednesday levelled on 68 minutes, the result of a breakaway from a Blades attack. SMITH was allowed the space to progress to the edge of the box, before shooting beyond the right arm of goalkeeper Willis.

Moments later the Blades were denied another spot-kick, this time McKenzie got away with a challenge on Ironside, who could have also considered himself unfortunate on 80 minutes when the home side had a goal disallowed. McFadzean's cross was turned in, via a post, by Ironside, but a close offside call denied the striker.

Late on the Blades came close to getting back ahead but Ironside's effort was blocked by McKenzie and Harriott's shot was deflected into the arms of the Wednesday goalkeeper before the full-time whistle arrived.

Blades: Willis, Williams, McFadzean, Harriott, Kennedy, Barry, Chapell, Whitehouse, Ironside, De Girolamo (Smith 89), Tonne.
Unused: Hodder, Owen, Pemberton.
