United's youngsters produced a dominant display to comfortably beat Sheffield Wednesday at Shirecliffe.
Jamie McDonagh opened the scoring midway through the first half and by half-time United were 3-0 up, with Jahmal Smith and Elliott Ptak on target. Wednesday pulled just after the restart, but Smith rounded off the scoring with just over ten minutes remaining to cap a superb team performance.
The first goal came in the 20th minute, after a mazy run and good interchange play MCDONAGH held off two defenders to fire home from the edge of the penalty area.
Ten minutes later the Blades doubled their advantage, Eyre latched onto a ball down the flank and beat two players before cutting the ball back to SMITH who showed great composure to apply the finishing touch from 12 yards.
On the stroke of half-time the hosts all but ended the game as a contest, when PTAK advanced from left-back to slot past the advancing goalkeeper, with Whiteman claiming the assist with a pinpoint pass.
After the break, Wednesday gave themselves a lifeline when they scored after a succession of corners, but hopes of a comeback never materialised and late on United added a fourth.
SMITH volleyed home at the back post after a swift counter attack had seen the Blades break through midfield.
Coach Travis Binnion heaped praise of the youngsters: "The lads showed great commitment and desire to compete with a much bigger and older side.
"The goals we scored were of a very high quality and that shows the potential we have as we look to next season.
"The most pleasing aspect of the win was how the U16 integrated themselves in the team, that is a massive positive for the challenge ahead."
