Chris Morgan says the Blades should only concentrate on the future and not worry about what has happened in previous years in the end of season play-offs.
Saturday's defeat at Portsmouth meant United are no longer able to win automatic promotion, but Morgan insists it shouldn't be all doom and gloom.
Speaking before Tuesday's trip to Crewe Alexandra, he remarked: "The difference is, on this occasion we haven't finished third and just missed out on automatic promotion. We know our fate before the last day of the season this time around and we haven't just been pipped at the final hurdle.
"The play-offs are often more difficult for those who narrowly miss out on the top two, especially if you have been there all season.
"Often the team that finishes third doesn't go up, but wherever you finish you have to remain strong mentally and prepare properly. As I said at the weekend, I want to finish on a high and that means we are determined to beat both Crewe and Preston.
"Let's go into the play-offs with some confidence and not worry too much about what has happened in the past because we can't affect that."
