U18s 2-2 Huddersfield - report

5 September 2012

United's U18s extended their unbeaten start to the new campaign with an entertaining draw with Huddersfield Town at Shirecliffe.

Jake Charles scored the opening goal of the game in the first-half, but the Blades hit back with goals from Jordan Hodder and Owen Heather to take the lead midway through the second-half. It looked like United were on course for a third consecutive victory until Duane Holmes netted a late equaliser from a long throw to earn the Terriers a share of the spoils.

After the Blades had made much of the running in the opening exchanges, Willis failed to get his body behind a speculative effort from CHARLES and, somewhat against the run of play, Town found themselves a goal to the good at the interval.

The home side responded positively after the break and ten minutes after the restart HODDER equalised with a superb effort. Ben Whiteman found onrushing right back, who took two touches before delightfully chipping the Huddersfield goalkeeper to net his first of the season.

Moments later an excellent tackle by Max Pemberton in midfield, followed by a curling ball into the path of HEATHER paved the way for United to take a deserved lead.

Diego De Girolamo and Jahmal Smith both missed excellent opportunities to make the game safe and ultimately the Blades paid the price in the latter stages.

Having defended Town's set-pieces admirably, Whiteman lost HOLMES from a long throw and he beat Willis from inside the penalty area.

Having gone through pre-season unbeaten, the Blades have now won two and drawn one of their three competitive matches, much to the delight of John Pemberton:

"We started the game well and that is something we have worked on recently, we also defend set-pieces really well until right at the end when we conceded through a lack of concentration.

"We are creating numerous chances so now we must working on killing teams off because we are giving them hope towards the end of games.

"The lads have been brilliant throughout pre-season though and to still be unbeaten is testimony to how we have worked as a group and I am delighted with our progress to date."

Blades: Willis, Hodder, Ptak, Pemberton, Scarisbrick, J. Williams, Khan, Whiteman (Salt 88), De Girolamo (Eyre 77), Smith, Heather.
Unused: Payling, Lynch.
