U18s 4-1 Birmingham - report

29 October 2012

United's U18s produced an excellent performance which comfortably saw them beat Birmingham City at Shirecliffe on Saturday.

Diego De Girolamo netted a stunning first-half brace, before completing his hat-trick with a disputed third after the break. Otis Khan completed the rout just after the hour mark, with the only blemish on the victory being a late consolation for the visitors.

United hit the woodwork four times in 90 minutes, the first coming in the 19th minute prior to DE GIROLAMO leaving a defender in his wake before lashing home beyond the hapless City goalkeeper.

Ten minutes later DE GIROLAMO got his second to double the Blades advantage, this time turning his marker from a throw-in before rifling home an unstoppable left-footed strike.

At the break United's lead could have been far greater, Khan the next to rattle the goal frame.

Eight minutes into the second half the game was put beyond doubt. Josh Williams flicked on a corner and in the ensuing melee DE GIROLAMO claimed he had forced the ball home, although there was a suspicion it was an own goal.

City were struggling to contain the rampant Blades and KHAN got in on the act in the 63rd minute, slotting home confidently after some excellent work by Smith.

The visitors mustered a strong finish, but a late back post header from a corner didn't detract from what was a superb win, much to the delight of coach Jamie Hoyland:

"This performance has been coming for a few weeks now. The lads have taken a lot on board recently and deserve all the credit for putting that work into action on the pitch.

"We created numerous chances and in truth the margin of victory could have been much greater and it not been for the extra coat of paint on the woodwork!"

Blades: Unused: Heather, Lynch, Scarisbrick.
