U21s 0-0 Coventry - report

5 November 2012

United's U21s were held to a goalless draw in an entertaining clash at Shirecliffe on Monday afternoon.

Both teams could have snatched a winner in the second half, Danny Philliskirk came the closest for the hosts, his shot going over after hitting the crossbar.

Aaron Barry continued his comeback from a broken leg, playing over 30 minutes after replacing Josh Williams early in the second half.

The first sight of goal came the visitors' way. From a cross by Roberts, Butler-Richards rose above Hodder, but with Jeffers ready to pull the trigger Kennedy produced a timely intervention.

Just after the half hour mark Ironside came close twice in quick succession. From a McFadzean cross Philliskirk knocked the ball down but Henderson got in the way of the striker's goalbound volley. From the resulting corner Ironside failed to get an outstretched leg to Harriott's dipping centre.

City had two more chances before the first period came to a close. Butler-Richards saw his long effort dip narrowly over the bar after cannoning off Kennedy, then the left winger was denied by the assured Willis after being freed by Daniels. At the other end, De Girolamo stung the palms of Dunn after good work by Philliskirk.

United started the second half on the front foot, Harriott firing over from 25 yard from Ironside's lay-off. The Sky Blues responded with a swift counter attack, only for Kennedy to be in the right place at the right time to deny Jeffers.

On the hour mark Philliskirk bulldozed his way into the penalty area and was unfortunate to see his shot clip the woodwork and go over. The striker then just failed to get his head on to Tonne's inswinging cross from the right with goalkeeper Dunn committed.

The hosts finished strongly and had several half chances as time elapsed. Philliskirk drew Dunn into action after a slip by Hussey, Harriott then fired over before De Girolamo had a sight of goal.

City had the final chance of the contest but Jeffers could only head over at the back post.

Blades: Willis, Hodder, McFadzean, Harriott, J. Williams (Barry 53), Kennedy, Tonne, Pemberton (Khan 73), Ironside, Philliskirk, De Girolamo.
