Matt Lowton has left Bramall Lane to join Premier League outfit, Aston Villa.
The 23-year-old has enjoyed a meteoric rise to prominence at S2 after making his debut at Cardiff City in the Championship in March 2010.
The versatile defender was a near ever-present last season, making 54 starts as the Blades narrowly missed out on an instant return to the Championship.
Lowton worked hard for his chance with United, proving himself during loan spells with Sheffield FC and Ferencvaros, before being given an opportunity to shine at the Lane. In total he made 89 appearances, scoring 10 goals, the first of which came in a 3-3 draw with Burnley at Bramall Lane in October 2010.
He said on Friday: "I want to thank Sheffield United for everything that they did for me, I was there since I was 15 so really that's where I've learned everything. I hope that I can keep progressing and repay the faith that the people there have shown in me.
"United have produced some fantastic players over the seasons, all you have to do is look at the two Kyles (Walker and Naughton) at the moment. They came through the same academy as me and played in the same teams as me when I was younger so hopefully I can follow in their footsteps."
