U18s 4-2 Coventry - result

20 August 2012

United's U18s ran out worthy winners in their seasonal opener against Coventry City at Shirecliffe.

After falling behind to a Ben Maund goal within two minutes, the Blades hit back with goals from Max Pemberton, Jahmal Smith, Diego De Girolamo and Ben Whiteman.

Late on Courtney Baker-Richardson netted a consolation for the Sky Blues, but the home side comfortably saw the game out to register a deserved success.

After a succession of early corners, MAUND fired the visitors into the lead, capitilising on some poor distribution from the Blades. United hit back straight from the restart, De Girolamo picked out the late run of PEMBERTON, who slide the ball home at the front post.

Before the break the home side took the lead, Heather glided along the byline before picking out SMITH who tapped home. The Blades continued to dominate after the break and after beating three defenders DE GIROLAMO calmly slotted past the goalkeeper to make it three.

Another incisive through ball put WHITEMAN in the clear and he added a fourth with ease.

In the third and final minute of injury time BAKER-RICHARDSON netted for the visitors but that failed to take the gloss of an excellent result for the hosts.

Following the resounding victory over the Sky Blues, Director of Academy Coaching John Pemberton outlined his main objectives for the season ahead, insisting the development of his scholars at both U18 and U21 level will be put before results on the field:

"It was a pleasing performance to start with and it shows how far we have come since Coventry put six past us last season.

"But I am not too bothered about results this season because my focus is our developing our 17 scholars and ensuring they don't suffer from a burn out of playing too much football.

"The more experienced second years like Jordan Hodder and Chris Salt for example will be starting for the U21s so as the season goes on we will have to include players from the U15s and U16s.

"When that is the case you might see the results suffer but that development of the players won't and that is the only thing that matters because we need them all to get a full season's football in their systems to aid their progression."

Blades: Willis, Payling, Scarisbrick, Khan, J. Williams, Ptak, Whiteman, Pemberton, De Girolamo (Coustrain 74), Smith, Heather.
