Morecambe 0-2 Blades - report

4 August 2012

Newboy Tony McMahon and teenage striker Joe Ironside were on target as the Blades secured victory at Morecambe on Saturday.

Danny Wilson started with a strong team at the Globe Arena as the Blades continued the unbeaten pre-season preparations.

Cofie had a fierce shot parried away by Roche in the home team’s goal after Porter had set up the Manchester United loanee.

For the home side, midfielder Williams created a couple of half chances with crosses from a corner and free kick.

Cofie left the game on 25 minutes with a hip injury, replaced by McFazdean, who was playing for the Blades for the third time in the week after playing at the New York stadium and then at Hallam on Thursday evening.

The Blades scored after 28 minutes when McMAHON received the ball in midfield from Doyle, the former Middlesbrough player moved forward calmly, transferring the ball from his right foot to left and then curling an inch perfect curling shot into the corner of Roche’s goal.

The visitors went close again five minutes later when McDonald fired just wide with a low shot from distance.

The second half began with Porter firing a shot at Roche after receiving the ball from McFazdean, who began were he left off in the first period ,causing problems for the Morecambe defence as he attacked down the left wing.

Ten minutes into the second period Howard saved well after a low left footed effort from Ellison looked to be going into the bottom corner of the net.

Ellison and McMahon were spoken to by referee Tierney after they seemed to fall out on the touch line, a few moments later the new defender combined well with Doyle in midfield, with the Blades captain shooting just wide from distance.

Having just come on, Ironside went close when put through by Quinn with the out-rushing Roche smothering the ball at the second attempt to keep the score at 1-0.

Ironside and Quinn linked up well with McAllister bursting through for the Blades as the visitors continued in vain to look for a second.

The second goal arrived on 88 minutes as Quinn cutely slid the ball through for IRONSIDE to cleverly finish, chipping the ball over the on-rushing Roche.
