Danny Wilson has confirmed that goalkeeper Mark Howard will start the League One season as United's number one goalkeeper.
Following Steve Simonsen's summer departure, Wilson has decided to go for Howard's experience, rather than the youthful George Long, although he insists Long can provide the former Blackpool stopper with real competition for the number one jersey:
"Mark Howard started against Burton Albion on Saturday and he will be our number one for the foreseeable future.
"When he arrived at the Club last season Steve Simonsen was in top form and Mark couldn't displace him, but now he has an opportunity to make that spot his own and he will no doubt be looking forward to playing regularly.
"George is still young and a great prospect. His time will be but there is no rush to push him too quickly because goalkeepers these days play into their 70's!
"Saying that he is more than capable if called upon, as we saw last season and I am sure George will keep Mark on his toes by pushing him all the way on the training pitch."
