Newcastle 2-3 Women's Development - report

29 January 2019

Currently sitting in 2nd place in the Reserve Northern League, The Sheffield United Women Development team travelled to 3rd place Newcastle on Sunday. After a stunning 6-2 win for the Blades previously against Newcastle at the start of the season, Newcastle fought back in their second meet to secure 2-1 win over United at home, setting the scene what was due to be an interesting game.

At the start of the first, weather conditions were tough and saw the Blades go 1-0 down after a 35-yard strike from Newcastle's midfield was carried over Goalkeeper Hall aided by the strong winds.

The 33rd minute saw Csomor regained possession out wide, showing some individual class to beat three players going on to neatly place the ball into the bottom corner to put United level. Just before half time United went 2-1 up thanks to Beck assisted by Csomor.

As the second half got underway, a mistimes tackle from Ibbotson provided Newcastle with a ideally placed free kick on the edge of the Box. Crossing the ball into the box, there was plenty of Newcastle players available and they were able to get a head on the ball to bring the side back level.

A strong response from the Blades along with some great midfield play from Spurr, Beck and Ibbotson winning everything back in the centre of the park, ensured formidable striker Nat Shaw remained a constant threat to Newcastle.

The dying minutes of the match saw United's dominance push Newcastle into conceding a corner in the 87th minute. Marsden delivered the ball with precision to find the head of Marshall who netted the goal securing a big three points for the Blades.

Blades: Hall, Ibbotson, Spurr, Thomas, Housley, Marshall, Scott, Amy Beck, Marsden, Csomor, Shaw.
Subs: Wilson, Douglas, Brown.
