Wigan 2-1 Under 18s - report

Sheffield United's Under 18s fell to a rare defeat away at league leaders Wigan Athletic in a frustrating encounter made difficult by the conditions.

An uneventful first half was followed by an all-action second which saw Daniel Jebbison equalise with 15 minutes to go, before a Wigan winner was followed by a disallowed goal for Jebbison who was then shown a straight red card soon after for an off the ball incident.

As both sides go to grip with a pitch bogged down by the rain in places and windy conditions, there were few chances to speak of for either team during the opening 45 minutes. Harrison Neal saw an effort from distance saved but that was about it for the Blades who were playing into the wind.

But with the wind behind them, the second half was a different story and made the result all the more frustrating.

The Blades pinned Wigan back early on and saw half chances and good openings come and go before Wigan took the lead with a rare attack as Sean McGurk fired home low from the edge of the box.

United though responded well and kept pushing, the equaliser coming with 15 minutes to go when Jebbison tapped home after Leo Gaxha had a header cleared off the line.

The game began to stretch and several feisty tackles went in from both sides as substitute Hassan Ayari was denied by the Wigan goalkeeper, before the hosts countered and retook the lead through Joseph's low effort into the corner.

As the wind became stronger going into the last 10, the Blades threw what they could at Wigan and had a goal disallowed as Jebbison stretched to tap home an effort from Harry Boyes.

The game boiled over with a couple of minutes as Jebbison was fouled on a Blades break, the resulting melee seeing both the Blades striker and Wigan's Tom Costello sent from the field by the referee and both teams reduced to 10 men.

The biggest chance to equalise came with the last kicks of the game. Kyron Gordon saw an effort cleared off the line in the fifth minute of stoppage time, the rebound fell to Andre Brooks inside the area who could only send his effort wide.

Blades: S. Kelly, Grant (Brooks 62), Boyes, Neal, Gordon, Cullinan, J. Kelly, Maguire (Ackroyd 85), Jebbison, Gaxha, Leak-Blunt (Ayari 70).
Unused: Chapman, Cappello.
