Under 18s 3-4 Coventry - report

Sheffield United's Under 18s were on the wrong end of a seven-goal thriller as the new season ended with defeat at the Steelphalt Academy.

First half goals from Ryan Viggars and Nicksoen Gomis either side of an own goal saw the scores level at 3-3 at the break before a late goal from Coventry's Harrison Nee sealed it in the final minutes of the game.

It was the first half where most of the action occurred and United will wonder how the scores were level at the break given the chances they created.

After a good opening few minutes, the visitors opened the scoring when Ryan Howley headed home from close range after Sam Ackroyd had just fired wide at the other end.

But the Blades did hit back quickly after. Ackroyd was somehow denied by Cian Tyler but Gomis reacted quickly to place the ball back across goal leaving Viggars with a tap in almost on the line.

The turnaround was complete soon after Angelo Capello had been denied by the post and Ackroyd saw another chance come and go, and it was a Coventry defender who put the ball through the net after he could do little to stop Jake Kelly's driven cross.

Coventry though scored twice in the next seven minutes, first when Sam Rodber tapped home and then when George Ward's free-kick from the left founds its way into the net without a touch from anyone.

To top a crazy first half, Gomis fired home into the roof of the net from a corner in first half stoppage time to ensure the score was 3-3 after just 45 minutes.

Typically, chances dried up for both sides after the break but United still often looked likeliest to go back in front.

But it wasn't to be on the opening day of the season as substitute Nee capitalised on some slack defending to fire past Sam Kelly and wrap up the three points for Coventry.

Blades: S. Kelly, Williams, Brooks, Neal, Skerritt, Gomis, J. Kelly, Maguire, Ackroyd (Williams 80), Viggars (Stainrod 76), Capello.
Unused: Chapman, Clarke.
