U18s 2-0 Charlton - report

21 April 2017

The could be more success on the horizon for the Blades.

United's U18s progressed to the final of the Professional Development League 2 play-off final with a deserved victory over Charlton Athletic at Bramall Lane on Friday evening.

After an even first-half, United seized control of the tie after the break and Jordan Hallam opened the scoring from the penalty spot, before George Cantrill headed home Harvey Gilmour's corner to ensure a safe passage to the end of season final.

The first half hour was an even contest, with the Blades slightly edging proceedings, although goalscoring opportunities were very much a premium. The only chance of note came after the visitors failed to clear a Norrington-Davies long-throw and skipper Slater fired a sweetly struck volley narrowly wide with Maynard-Brewer beaten.

With ten minutes remaining in the first period, United came close for a second time. A disputed corner from the left was swung in by Hallam and with Maynard-Brewer stuck on his line a combination of Graham and Cantrill tried to force the ball home, only for it to go over the bar from close-range.

But it was the visitors who should have opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time. A cross field free-kick by Maloney picked out the run of Doughty, who, having got the better of Charlesworth fired agonisingly wide of Warhurst's far post.

The Blades were immediately on the front foot upon the restart and took the lead in the 52nd minute from the penalty spot. Charlesworth's cross was headed across goal by Smith and Pollard was adjudged to have impeded Hirst as he tried to get control of the loose ball. From the spot, HALLAM lashed the ball home past Maynard-Brewer.

And things got even better for the hosts on the hour as they doubled the advantage. From Gilmour's inswinging corner from the right, CANTRILL rose highest to head home from close-range.

The clock was ticking down in the Blades favour and substitute Ford appeared to have tucked home goal number three after excellent work from Smith down the right, but the assistant referee thought otherwise.

Three minutes of added time were signalled but they went without incident as the Blades secured a final berth against either Coventry City or Sheffield Wednesday.

Blades: Warhurst, Charlesworth, Norrington-Davies, Gilmour, Graham, Cantrill, T. Smith, Slater, Hirst, Hallam (Parkhouse 79), Greaves (Ford 70).
Unused: Perryman, Doherty, Ferguson.
