Hull 2-0 Under 23s - report

Sheffield United's under 23s fell to a 2-0 defeat at Hull City in Paul Heckingbottom's first game in charge of the side.

The Blades looked sharp and played some good football but lacked a cutting edge up front and were punished twice by Hull's James Berry who scored both goals for the Tigers.

There was a familiar to look to the United side with a few players stepping up from last season's under 18s, and a front three of Leo Gaxha and Iliman Ndiaye with Angelo Cappello in behind caused problems for the Hull defence.

The Blades started the better of the two sides as Ndiaye saw a shot deflected wide, but a quick passing move from Hull led to Berry firing past Jordan Amissah as the game passed the 15 minute mark.

There was then a delay in play as Blades defender Jean Belehouan had to be stretchered off after coming out worst of a challenge with an opposition player, with Kamarl Grant replacing him after half an hour.

The pause in play seemed to halt any Blades momentum but the visitors picked up the pace again after the break.

United's best chance came with just over 20 minutes remaining when Gaxha couldn't stretch far enough to convert Cappello's teasing cross from the left.

The game was then put to bed when Berry slotted home his second after a cross from the right found the Hull number seven.

Heckingbottom's side kept fighting and introduced Will Osula, fresh from his brace for the under 18s on Saturday, and Andre Brooks, and should have been back in it when Harry Boyes was placed in on goal in the final minute, but his effort was smothered by the goalkeeper.

Blades: Amissah, Seriki, Boyes, Gordon, Belehouan (Grant 31), Gomis, Broadbent, Neal, Ndiaye, Gaxha (Osula 75), Cappello (Brooks 75).
Unused subs: Askew, Maguire.
