Birmingham 1-1 Under 23s - report

Sheffield United's Under 23s came from behind to snatch a late draw away at Birmingham City after some solid defensive work sustained some heavy pressure from the hosts.

In a game which saw few clear-cut chances for either side, the Blades could thank Michael Verrips for several good saves during the first half which kept United in the game when the chance to equalise finally appeared.

The first big chance though fell to the away side. Reece York connected with a corner on the volley, his effort was flicked on but brilliantly tipped over by the goalkeeper.

There wasn't much in terms of major chances for the visitors during the rest of the second half, Callum Gribbin going the closest when his free-kick drifted over the bar.

Verrips made several good saves down low to deny Birmingham the opener, one coming just before half-time as the Blades went into the break with the scores level.

The second half saw United penned back for the opening exchanges, but a solid defensive display kept the Blades in the game until Jack Concannon opened the scoring with 20 minutes left to play.

A corner driven low to the edge of the box was swept home brilliantly by Concannon to leave Verrips with little chance and give Birmingham City the lead.

But United weren't to be denied. The introduction of fresh legs in Harrison Neal, Sam Ackroyd and Angelo Capello plus a change of system opened things up late on and when York drove into the box, the outcome was the same as last week against Bristol as the midfielder was fouled, the referee once again pointing to the penalty spot.

Just as he did at Chesterfield last week, York stepped up himself and sent his spot kick into the corner of the net to level the scores.

Despite doing lots of defending, United looked likeliest to steal the points late on as the game became stretched, but the game ended level and United walked away with a hard-fought point.

Blades: Verrips, Sheppeard (Neal 77), Boyes, Ferguson, Gordon, Gomis, Gribbin (Ackroyd 68), York, Ompreon, Ndiaye (Capello 68), Andall-Gibbons.
Subs: Amissah, Brunt.
