Sheffield United's Under 23s fell to defeat away at Leeds United but a much improved performance on Tuesday's derby defeat at home to Sheffield Wednesday ensured the Blades could easily have walked away with a result.
Against a Leeds United side which at one point included first teamers such as Jack Clarke, Barry Douglas, Eddie Nketiah, Ezgjan Alioski and Gaetano Berardi, a young United side including Under 18 regulars Jake Kelly and Leo Gaxha pushed them all the way.
It was the Blades who had the first chance of the game. Kelly made an early impression with a tough sliding tackle in midfield, allowing George Broadbent to slip in Gaxha whose low effort was saved by Illan Meslier.
The hosts' experience soon told though as Leeds came driving forward, forcing a good low save out of Michael Verrips before Robbie Gotts lofted an effort over when one on one with the Blades goalkeeper.
The Blades ended the half the stronger team and should have been ahead when they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Reece York inside the box.
York picked himself up to take the spot kick but his low shot was well saved by Messlier. The hosts threw on Nketiah, Berardo and Alioski at the break and it took just ten minutes for the pressure to tell, but it was a Blades mistake that brought the opener.
A square pass across the penalty box from Kyron Gordon evaded Ashton Hall's touch and left Edmondson with the simplest of tap ins.
To their credit, the young Blades fought straight back and equalised immediately from the kick-off. Stephen Mallon's superb ball in from the left evaded Gaxha but wing-back Kelly was behind him to tap home an instant equaliser.
The game had sprung into life and minutes later Broadbent went close to putting United ahead when his header hit the crossbar, before Leeds retook the lead as Bogusz curled home a sublime free-kick.
Substitute Zak Brunt had the best chance to bring the game back level when his low effort was saved, while Hall denied Nketiah with a superb sliding tackle, the centre-back enjoying an excellent game for the visitors.
