Under 23s 2-1 Bolton - report

Sheffield United's Under 23s sealed their first win of 2020 against bottom side Bolton Wanderers despite fielding a relatively inexperienced side which saw half a dozen Under 18s players start the game.

Looking for a timely boost ahead of Friday's Sheffield derby at Hillsborough before two games at Bramall Lane, the Blades fell behind after just six minutes when a low shot from White from outside the box found the bottom corner.

But United didn't let their heads drop and responded within 10 minutes. Some good play led to Zak Brunt finding Callum Gribbin, the midfielder's silky footwork baffling two defenders before he sent his effort high into the roof of the net to make it 1-1.

The Blades arguably should and could have put the game to bed in the next 15 minutes as several big chances came and went.

Jake Young fired wide before he should have been left with a tap in had Leo Gaxha's ball across goal not been just a tad too heavy.

Gribbin also fired wide but it was Gaxha who was the constant threat, his pace in behind causing plenty of issues for the Wanderers defence.

Bolton came back into it and saw a free-kick come back off the post, but the second half was a much closer affair with neither side really being able to create major chances.

That was until the final 15 minutes when Gribbin drove into the box and was bundled to the ground, the referee instantly pointing to the penalty spot.

It was Gaxha who picked up the ball and promptly fired low into the corner to give the Blades the lead and get the goal he deserved.

There was time though for late drama as both goalkeepers went close to scoring in the final seconds of the game. A 95th minute corner was met by the Wanderers number one but his header was cleared, before Amissah smashed the ball downfield with his opposite number still up field, but the ball dropped just wide as the referee blew for full-time.

Blades: Amissah, J. Kelly, Boyes, Belehouan, Ferguson (To. Williams 66), Gomis, Brunt, Neal, Young, Gaxha (Osula 85), Gribbin.
Unused: Chapman, Andall-Gibbons, Brooks.
