Sheffield United Under 23s fell to defeat in their game of 2020 after initially taking the lead through Jake Young. Two goals though from Birmingham City in the second half turned the game on its head and allowed the visitors to walk away with the points.

Jordan Doherty and David Parkhouse returned to the side after returning from loan spells, but it was Young who struck the first blow just ten minutes into the game and he couldn't have hoped for an easier goal.

A mix-up in communication at the back saw Redmond head a long ball past his own goalkeeper, allowing Young to steal and tap home into an empty net from a couple of yards out.

The Blades struggled to maintain momentum and Jordan Amissah had to be alert twice to tip over two powerful efforts from distance from the visitors, but neither side created any major chances.

United were forced into a change at the break with youngster Andre Brooks replacing Ashton Hall, and Birmingham struck just as United had a mere 10 minutes into the second half.

After Amissah had made another good save, a corner into the box was only half-cleared, allowing Thompson-Sommers to smash home into the corner from inside the box.

The Blades introduced the third returning player in Oliver Greaves straight away, but the hosts found themselves under more pressure and had Amissah to thank once again as he somehow clawed a header off the line after it looked like the effort had gone over him and was heading in.

The visitors turned the tables completely as the game entered the final 20 minutes, another set-piece United's undoing as Odin Bailey turned home Bajrami's header back into the penalty area.

Despite being on the back foot, United came agonisingly close to an equaliser when Greaves slid in on the end of a cross but his effort cannoned back off the crossbar and behind for a corner.

For all the late Blades pressure, no equaliser arrived as the year started in frustrating fashion.

Blades: Amissah, Broadbent, Sheppeard, Doherty, Belehouan, Hall (Brooks 46), York, Gribbin (Andall-Gibbons 65), Young (Greaves 55), Parkhouse, Ndiaye.
Unused subs: Chapman.
