Wigan 1-0 Under 23s - report

Sheffield United Under 23s pushed in-form Wigan Athletic all the way on Thursday afternoon but were undone by a cruel 89th minute winner from the hosts who made it nine wins from nine in 2020.

The Blades though had been well in the game throughout the 90, playing good football and creating good openings, with substitute Ky Gordon seeing a goal disallowed during the second half.

United never look fazed by the form of their hosts and had a go right from the start, Sam Kelly being left largely untested in the Blades goal.

There were few major opportunities for either team during the opening 45 minutes, the impressive Harrison Neal going closest when his dipping effort from range was tipped over.

Tommy Williams saw a shot deflected behind but the right wing-back had to be withdrawn on the stroke of half-time due to injury and was replaced by Gordon.

As the game got stretched, both sides started to create openings. Zak Brunt saw an effort saved before Gordon was denied by the linesman's flag when he headed home Callum Gribbin's cross to the far post.

The introduction of Leo Gaxha and Daniel Jebbison brought an extra spark but Kelly had to be alert down the other end to push away a powerful effort from a tight angle.

Gordon went close again when his sliding effort was saved on the line, before the hammer blow came minutes later when substitute Weir was slipped in on goal and fired low past Kelly to win the game.

Blades: S. Kelly, To. Williams (Gordon 45), Boyes, Belehouan, Hall, Gomis, Brunt, Neal, Ompreon (Gaxha 60), Young (Jebbison 75), Gribbin.
Unused: Chapman, Andall-Gibbons.
