U23s 2-1 Charlton - report

United's Under 23s recovered from a goal down to seal all three points at home to Charlton Athletic thanks to quickfire goals from forwards Jordan Hallam and Harry Boyes.

United had trailed to Jamie Mascoll's first half strike in a game which saw few chances and a good run out for Paul Coutts, George Baldock and Martin Cranie.

The Blades started the better of the two sides but could do little with their possession. The visitors too struggled to create until Mascoll opened the scoring just after the half hour mark.

Goalkeeper Jake Eastwood under-hit a pass out from the back towards Coutts, allowing Mascoll to intercept and curl the ball beyond the keeper.

United struggled to get a foothold back in the game in terms of chances before the break, only Hallam's half-volley which flashed past the post could be classed as a clear chance.

But the second half was a different story, with United coming out with real purpose to turn the game around, which they did inside the space of the first 15 minutes after half-time.

Oliver Greaves was the provider for both goals. First, he sent a neat one-touch flick perfectly into the path of Hallam, the striker doing the rest by running through and calmly slotting the ball beyond Ashley Maynard-Brewer in the Charlton goal.

Seven minutes later and the comeback was complete. Another good first touch put Greaves himself in on goal, but his effort flashed across the six-yard box and allowed Boyes to somehow turn the ball in from an acute angle.

Coutts, Cranie and Baldock were all withdrawn soon after and chances were once again at a premium for both sides for the final half an hour.

Charlton pushed for an equaliser and United had to be at their best at the back, Jake Bennett particularly impressive in his first 90 minutes of the season.

Blades: Eastwood, Cranie (Gordon 71), Bennett, Coutts (York 71), Cantrill, Gilmour, Baldock (Sheppeard 63), Greaves, Oure, Hallam, Boyes.
Unused: Amissah, Ackroyd.
