Doncaster 1-3 Under 23s - report

United's Under 23s continued their 100% start in the Premier League Youth Cup with a 3-1 victory at nearby Doncaster Rovers.

A hat-trick from Jordan Hallam sealed the win on what was a night of many chances for both sides in an entertaining encounter.

The first 20 minutes was a quiet affair, with only George Broadbent's low effort, saved comfortably by Louis Jones to speak of.

Doncaster were restricted to efforts from range before Hallam opened the scoring after 26 minutes. Simeon Oure won the ball back off the Rovers defence, played in Hallam who curled a low effort into the far corner.

With United in relative control of proceedings, the equaliser seven minutes before the break came in frustrating fashion. Jake Wright's rash challenge on the edge of the box allowed Ali Crawford to step up and curl a low effort around the Blades wall, leaving the impressive Marcus Dewhurst with no chance.

The second half was a much livelier affair and it was Rovers who started the better, looking to build on the momentum from their equaliser.

Crawford, the home side's dangerman throughout, lifted an even over before Jermaine Anderson saw a powerful strike tipped over by Dewhurst less than 60 seconds later.

But the tide soon began to turn back United's way with a succession of chances, Wright seeing a header blocked before substitute Harrison Neal was also denied and Hallam slammed an effort off the post.

Minutes later and Hallam did have his second, slotting home from Reece York's pin-point cross to put United back in front.

There was a let off moments later when Will Longbottom smashed an effort off the bar before Dewhurst pulled off a super instinctive save to deny Beestin with a header from point-blank range.

United sealed the points and a second straight cup win with five minutes to go though when Cody Prior felled Oure in the box, with Hallam promptly stepping up to score his hat-trick before he was replaced immediately by Zak Brunt.

Blades: Dewhurst, Cantrill, Lafferty, Doherty, Wright (Young 71), York, Sheppeard, Broadbent (Neal 46), Oure, Hallam (Brunt 86), Mallon.
Unused: Amissah, Williams.
