United’s Under 23s fought back from a goal down thanks to a Reece York effort from close range after Zak Brunt’s initial effort had been saved.
Blades had started on the front foot but both sides struggled to create chances during an even opening 20 minutes at Stocksbridge.
It was the visitors who took the lead when Jordan Ponticelli turned home a low cross with a neat flick with left Jake Eastwood with little chance of making a save from close range.
But United fought back and were level ten minutes later with their first major chance of the game.
Brunt picked up the ball outside the box and unleashed an effort which was too hot for the goalkeeper to handle, allowing York to nip in and slot home the equaliser.
Ponticelli hit the crossbar with a stinging effort shortly before the break but it was United who were the better team as the game entered the second half.
Within minutes of the restart, Oliver Greaves saw a free-kick pushed away before Harrison Neal’s follow-up effort was blocked.
There was plenty of good link-up between the United forwards and several teasing crosses into the box but neither side were able to create too many meaningful opportunities.
Jake Eastwood was called upon to make a good save as Coventry threatened to steal the points as the game entered stoppage time but in the end both sides had to make do with a point.
