Ipswich 0-2 U23s – report

22 January 2018

United U23s side featuring Ched Evans picked up their second Premier League Cup win of the season with victory over Ipswich Town.

The striker played just over an hour and impressed as first half strikes from Jordan Hallam and Tyler Smith saw the Blades to a comfortable win at Portman Road.

The first 10 minutes were quiet in Suffolk but the Blades sprung into life and drew first blood on 11 as Smith worked his way into the box and awaited the arrival of HALLAM who finished calmly into the bottom corner.

Ipswich increased their intensity and pressure on the United backline and a through ball found Folami in on goal as he looked to level the scores only for a great last ditched tackle from Norrington-Davies to deny the hosts an equaliser.

A great chance went begging on the half hour mark as Slater won the ball back in midfield and Hallam played in Smith who couldn't quite get the ball under control and fired just over the bar from 12 yards.

Just a couple of minutes later SMITH would atone for his missed chance as he got in behind the Ipswich defence and poked past Crowe to double the advantage.

A third was almost added on the stroke of half time as Mallon's corner was met on the edge of the six yard box by Evans who turned his effort just wide of the post.

Shortly after the interval Dewhurst was forced into a very good save as a deflected cross wrong footed the United stopper and forced him to change body shape and get down low to his right and turn the ball round the post.

Smith would have the ball in the net again for the Blades on the hour mark but he was denied by the offside flag after getting on the end of a Mallon through ball.

The hosts would miss a big chance going into the final quarter of an hour as a low cross was met by Nydam at the back post who somehow turned over from very close range.

United held out comfortably for the remainder of the match and deservedly claimed all three points.

Blades: Dewhurst, Deidrick-Roberts (Portman 68), Norrington-Davies, Doherty, Graham, Mallon (Broadbent 83), Gilmour, Slater, Evans (Wright 61), Hallam, Smith.
Unused: Warhurst, Oure.
