Kieron Freeman played 45 minutes as United's U23s recorded a comfortable victory over West Brom in the Premier League Cup.

A first half Tyler Smith double saw the Blades to three points at Stocksbridge address United moved level on points with group leaders Aston Villa.

It took only 30 seconds for the game's first chance as Hallam skilfully worked his way into the area on the left hand side and squared for Smith who couldn't make sufficient contact and sent the ball wide.

The opening goal would arrive on 11 minutes as Hallam's corner from the left hand side caused a scramble and the ball fell kindly for SMITH to fire home from close range.

Just two minutes later another Hallam set piece was causing Albion problems with a free kick that was spilled by Pierce but the goalkeeper did well to deny Semple on the follow up.

United came close to extending their advantage just after the half hour as Semple's pinpoint pass over the top found Smith who just got his shot off only to see it deflected wide for a corner.

Shortly afterwards the Blades produced a great piece of play with Freeman, Slater and Hallam linking up beautifully but the latter's shot flew over the bar as United continued to dominate.

The lead would be deservedly doubled five minutes before the break as Slater sent an excellent ball over the top for Norrington-Davies to race onto and square across to SMITH for a simple finish and his second of the game.

After the restart the game was quiet for a period but the Blades came close again on the hour as Graham headed just over from a Hallam corner.

With 20 minutes to go Smith came close to sealing his hat-trick as he cut inside but his effort flew just wide of the post as the Blades remained in control.

As the game reached it's closing stages United would continue to push for a third as a Norrington-Davies strike was cleared off the line by Jameson.

United goalkeeper Warhurst would be tested for the first time with three minutes to go as he saved low down from point blank range following a corner.

Blades: Warhurst, Freeman (Broadbent 45), Norrington-Davies, Doherty, Graham, Semple, Gilmour, Slater, Wright (Oure 84), Hallam, Smith.
Unused: Dewhurst, Williams, Neal.
