Bristol City 1-2 Under 23s - report

United's U23s were victorious in Monday's Professional Development League opener against Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

First-half goals from skipper Harvey Gilmour and Jordan Hallam from the penalty put the Blades in the ascendancy and the visitors were resolute after former Blade Diego De Girolamo pulled a goal back for the Robins just before the hour.

The first chance would go United's way. Following successive corners the ball found Gilmour on the edge of the six yard box but the skipper fired just wide in the sixth minute,

The visitors were the better side in the opening half hour and deservedly took the lead in the 35th minute. A short free kick routine involving Bennett found GILMOUR who struck first time on his left foot into the far corner.

Moments later, United were handed the chance to double the advantage. Doherty was brought down by Morrell's rash challenge inside the area and HALLAM stepped up and to beat keeper Lucic from the 12 yards.

Just before the hour, the referee again pointed to the spot after DE GIROLAMO was adjudged to have been fouled and the former United Academy graduate gave Dewhurst no chance from the resulting penalty.

Bennett tried to make sure of the points late on, beating a number of City challenges before forcing replacement goalkeeper Wollacott into a smart save. That would be the final noteworthy action of the game as the Blades saw the game out to start the season with a maximum.

Speaking after the game, Academy Manager Travis Binnion praised his side, remarking: "We played really well first-half and caused them a lot of prolems.

"The injury to Harvey (Gilmour) forced us to reshuffle the pack, but it was a fantastic effort from such a young squad."

Blades: Dewhurst, Bennett, Norrington-Davies, Ferguson, Graham, Cantrill, Gilmour (Broadbent 47), Doherty, Parkhouse, Hallam (Belehouan 90), Greaves (Hawkes 58).
Unused: Warhurst, Mason.
