United's U23s booked a place in the semi-finals of the Premier League Cup with a hard fought victory over Newcastle United on Friday night.
A goal in each half from Tyler Smith were enough to see of a strong Newcastle side at Bracken Moor.
The Blades opened the scoring just three minutes in as Mallon put in a great cross for Portman at the back post and his effort was turned home by SMITH.
Just 10 minutes later the lead was almost doubled as some good link up play on the right between Smith, Portman and Cantrill saw the latter produce a cross for Hutchinson but his header was saved brilliantly by goalkeeper Harker.
Newcastle enjoyed long spells of possession without creating anything of note until the 40th minute. A corner bounced through a crowd of players and landed at the feet of Charman just two yards out but he couldn't react quick enough and Doherty cleared.
After the interval, the visitors levelled in very fortunate circumstances. Fernandez got past Semple down the left and his low cross ricocheted off Dewhurst's leg as it went through him and trickled over the line on 64 minutes.
Newcastle almost took the lead minutes later as a run from Fernandez on the counter attack saw Sangare in on goal but he couldn't keep his effort down.
The Blades took full advantage and regained the lead on 77 minutes. Slater brought the ball down, drove through the centre and laid off Hutchinson who in turn sent SMITH in behind to fire into the bottom corner.
A few minutes later the icing was almost put on the cake, as Slater sent Parkhouse in on goal, but the forward fired wide and the Blades were forced to defend well to see the game out.
