Palace 1-5 United Women - report

Sheffield United Women continued their superb run of form with a resounding 5-1 win away at Crystal Palace.

It was the second game in succession the Blades had found the net five times as Carla Ward's side moved up to second in the FA Women's Championship table.

A hat-trick from Jade Pennock plus second half goals Olivia Fergusson and Veatriki Sarri sealed what in the end was a comfortable victory after Magda Mosengo had equalised during the first half.

United started brightest but didn't create too many clear chances despite plenty of pressure in the opening 25 minutes.

Pennock, Fergusson and midfielder Maddy Cusack in particular were trying to open the Palace defence up and that opening game just before the half hour mark when Cusack slotted in Pennock with a superb through the ball and the winger took a touch before slotting the ball past Gillett.

But the visitors didn't have the lead for very long. Palace intercepted a loose ball in midfield, Rutherford playing in Mosengo who ran through and managed to the squeeze the ball over the line despite the best efforts of Leandra Little.

United responded though within minutes. A neat one two between Pennock and Aimee Palmer ended in Pennock lobbing home her second of the game to put the Blades back in front.

Ward's side came out flying after the break, keen on wrapping up the game as soon as possible in search of a fourth successive league win.

Pennock went close when she had an effort saved before she did find the net moments later but was denied by the offside flag.

The pressure did tell when Fergusson tapped home the third after Naomi Hartley's effort from a corner was blocked in front of goal as the Blades established control on the match.

Within the next 15 minutes the points were sealed. First, Sarri curled a corner straight into the back of the net while just 90 seconds past before Pennock sealed her hat-trick when she squeezed the ball into the bottom corner.

There was a late debut for development squad player Millee Clarke as United wrapped up another important three points on the road.

Flaherty, Tierney, Little (Paul 70), Hartley, Pennock, Cusack, Wilkinson, Dixon, Palmer, Sarri (Clarke 85), Fergusson.
