United Women 6-0 Millwall - report

11 May 2019

Sheffield United's women's team ended their season in spectacular fashion with a 6-0 win against Millwall at Bramall Lane.

Over 1,000 supporters were in attendance to see Carla Ward's side hit bottom side Millwall for six to secure seven wins in a row at the end of the team's debut Championship campaign.

United were rarely troubled and stand-in goalkeeper Nikki Davies had little to do during a 90 minutes which saw the Blades dominate, aided by a first half sending off for the visitors.

It took just over ten minutes for the opener to come and when it did it was the captain who stepped up to the plate.

A neat move including Jade Pennock and Bex Rayner allowed Gilliatt to get the ball out of her feet on the left and fire an effort into the top corner.

Six minutes later it was 2-0 and it was another stunner, this time Rayner turning scorer. A neat one-two with Ebony Salmon gave Rayner the time and space to rifle an effort into the other side of the goal this time, once again leaving Stewart in the Millwall goal with no chance.

The Blades had to wait a little while longer for their third when Chantelle Mackie handballed Danielle Cox's header on the line, allowing the referee to point to the spot and send the defender off.

Salmon stepped up to send her penalty into the corner and give the Blades a comfortable 3-0 lead at the break.

In the second half, United were once again comfortable and added another three goals to put the gloss on a top performance. Salmon and Pennock were both denied by Stewart before Pennock continued her great run of form with another stunning effort from outside the box.

Salmon added her second soon after a short corner was worked to her and her looping cross from the left found its way fortuitously into the far corner of the net.

Ward introduced striker Tania Marsden for her landmark 300th club appearance and she went close to adding a sixth when she headed Sarri's free-kick just wide.

Pennock did eventually find the net again, this time from close range as she took down a cross and fired low past Stewart to round off a fantastic afternoon and the season.

Blades: Davies, S. Barker, Tierney, Pennock, Cox (Sarri 63), Gilliatt, Rayner (T. Marsden 75), H. Barker (Dixon 56), Hartley, Cusack, Salmon.
Unused: B. Marsden.
