United Women v London Bees - preview

Sheffield United's women's team are back home on Saturday evening with Carla Ward's side looking for a fifth consecutive victory against London Bees.

Since the last home match against Crystal Palace, the Blades have recorded three successive 2-1 victories on the road at Tottenham, Leicester and Durham respectively.

The results leave Ward and her team in the top half, saw Maddy Cusack and Jade Pennock - the latter has scored in our last four games - nominated for player of the month and Ward herself take home the manager of the month award for March.

The most recent victory was perhaps the most impressive of them all. Durham had only lost once all season, beating Manchester United 3-1 at New Ferens Park and going down just 1-0 in their recent FA Cup quarter-final with holders Chelsea.

It means United's 2-1 win there on Sunday was all the more momentous as it was deserved. Goals from Danielle Cox and another for Pennock put the side 2-0 up before Beth Hepple's strike halved the deficit.

This weekend's opponents ran out 2-0 winners when the sides last met last year at The Hive, but the fortunes for both have flipped ever since.

While United have won four on the bounce, Bees are currently on a run of five consecutive defeats as they look to steady the ship after the departure of manager Luke Swindlehurst.

England legend Rachel Yankey has taken over the reins but the team haven't picked up a point in the league since the start of February.

They still sit sixth in the league though, four points with United and having played a game more, a win for Ward and her team again on Saturday would go a long way to securing fifth in the league, with Aston Villa the only side realistically who could push them back into the bottom half should three points be secured at the weekend.

Leicester 1-2 United Women

31 March 2019

Jade Pennock scored a second 90th minute winner in as many games to ensure United's women's team ended March with a 100% league record.

The Blades trailed to Hayley James' header with little over 15 minutes to go but a stunner from substitute Ellie Gilliatt set up another dramatic finale one week on from the win at Tottenham.

It had been a frustrating match for the Blades up to that point as chances were few and far between despite Carla Ward's side being in relative control of the encounter.

Ebony Salmon was once again lively up front and the on loan forward fired over the first opening as United looked to take the initiative.

Pennock saw two efforts from distance well held by Demi Lambourne while Fran Bentley was only called into action to save a header as Leicester tried to build some momentum.

The Foxes should have taken the lead immediately after the break. Half-time substitute Sam Tierney doing brilliantly to stop Mel Johnson rolling the ball into an empty net after the striker used her pace to round Bentley.

Salmon lobbed an effort wide as United pushed for a winner but they were dealt a blow with 15 minutes to go when Hayley James headed home Rosie Axten's corner.

Not to be deterred, the Blades hit back with immediate effect. Super sub Gilliatt picked the ball up outside the box and fired an unstoppable effort into the top corner for the equaliser.

Salmon hit the post with a stinging effort before she was denied by Lambourne as the game entered the stoppage time.

It didn't matter though, the corner turned in by Pennock who scored her second last-gasp winner in as many games and sealed another vital three points for United.

Blades: Bentley, S. Barker, Pennock, Cox, Rayner (Sarri 88), Paul, Dixon, H. Barker, Cusack, Hartley, Salmon.
Unused: Davies, Ford, Housley.
