Women's Villa preview

7 December 2018

Sheffield United's women's team travel to Aston Villa this Sunday for their final league match before the short winter break commences until January.

It will be the third time United have faced Gemma Davies' side already this season, with Carla Ward's side coming out on top in their first game of the new season in the Continental Cup and again in the FA Women's Championship match held at Bramall Lane.

Goals from Danielle Cox and Tania Marsden got United's new era off to the perfect start back in August before a Sophie Jones hat-trick and a penalty from Alethea Paul saw United run out 4-1 winners at home in the league a few weeks later.

Villa sit four points behind the Blades in the table so come what may Ward and her side will head into the break ahead of this weekend's opponents but United will have improve their form on the road to come away with three points.

In the league, United have only a win at Crystal Palace and a draw at Millwall to show for their efforts away from home this season so will be looking for a repeat of their cup win at Boldmere St. Michaels to take some momentum into Christmas.

Ward was able to afford starts to Nicole Kemp and Alethea Paul in Wednesday's cup defeat at Manchester City and in even brighter news there was a third debut in four games as Autumn Housley featured in the last five minutes at the City Academy.

Off the back of debuts for Izzy Ford and Beth Ibbotson, Ward is showing her faith in youth and all three could be involved again as United head to Villa before ending the first half of the season at home to Leicester in the final Continental Cup next Wednesday night.

Aston Villa 5-1 United Women - report

9 December 2018

Sheffield United women's team ended the first half of the year in disappointing fashion as they fell 5-1 away at Aston Villa, largely thanks to a Jodie Hutton hat-trick.

An inspired performance from the 17-year-old play an influential role throughout and goals from Sophie Haywood and Tanisha Smith rounded off the defeat.

The first half was a fairly quiet affair broken up by two quick goals before half-time that swung the game in Villa's favour.

Hutton got her first of the evening after 40 minutes after a slip from Nicole Kemp allowed her a clear sight at goal and she made no mistake by firing a powerful effort by Alex Brooks.

Two minutes later and Villa doubled their lead when Haywood nicked the ball past a defender and slammed an effort in at the near post.

Carla Ward's side looked they'd got themselves back in the game just five minutes into the second half when Sophie Jones was fouled inside the box, the forward stepping up to send Sian Rogers the wrong way from the penalty spot.

But it took just ten minutes for Villa to re-establish their two-goal advantage and it was Hutton once again at the heart of things.

The winger fought her way through two challenges, saw her first effort saved by Brooks but she tapped home the rebound with Brooks still on the ground.

She completed her hat-trick soon after, reacting quickest after Brooks parried Alice Hassall's effort from range.

Substitute Tanisha Smith rounded things off with a looping header from a free-kick for what was her first senior goal for the club.

United now face Leicester City on Wednesday night in the side's final Continental Cup match before a short winter break.

Blades: Brooks, Kemp (H. Barker 46), Ibbotson, Cox, Gilliatt, S. Barker, Tierney, Pennock, Ford (Marsden 61, Merrick, Jones.
Unused subs: Joyce, Rayner, Paul, Dixon, Hartley.
