Long Eaton 0-0 United Ladies – report

26 March 2018

United extended the unbeaten league run to 16 games but returned home disappointed after a frustrating draw, having had the lion's share of possession and chances.

Even without three first team squad players available United still had a strong squad on the day such is the depth. The Blades made four changes from the side that beat Long Eaton 4-1 in Sheffield last month, the bad weather having prevented any competitive games since.

United went with a 4-5-1 formation and spent almost the majority of the first half in the Long Eaton half probing for a clear goalscoring chance. Despite this domination Long Eaton thwarted United and restricted the visitors to just two clear shots, Millie Kenyon's going wide and at the end Tania Marsden's over. It was a poor half for the few spectators.

Thankfully the second half was more entertaining as United stretched Long Eaton more. Jen Pearson dipped a free-kick to the bottom corner of the Long Eaton goal only for 'keeper Leah Kellogg to get down well to tip the ball away. The follow up saw United have a handball shout when Sophie Bell's shot was blocked.

Kellogg was having a fine game, handling every cross and her busy defence restricted United in the final third. United substitute Amy Beanland crossed one for Kenyon to volley against the near upright and as the clock ticked down their was an increasing feeling that maybe this was going to be one of those games as it just wasn't falling right. Long Eaton had maybe three attacks all half, such was the one-way traffic to their goal.

United ran out of time despite corners, scrambles and half chances and were disappointed at the end.

This game was the first of the remaining six games of the season all away from home. This Sunday United play Burton Albion at Stafford Rangers' ground.

Blades: Houldsworth, Robinson, Marshall, Froggatt, Barker, Bell, Brown (Shaw), Hickerman (Beanland), Pearson (Spurr), Kenyon, Marsden.
