Ipswich 1-1 Blades - report

United were dominant but could only return from Suffolk with a point, thanks to Billy Sharp's leveller.

The skipper scored his 13th goal of the season just after the break to cancel out a first half strike from Ellis Harrison, which deflected and looped over Dean Henderson.

Chief Wilder named an unchanged team, keeping faith with the team that faced West Brom the previous week. Clarke was deemed fit enough for the bench and replaced youngster Smith.

United made the brighter start and home goalkeeper Gerken scrambled a half-volley from Sharp around a post inside two minutes - from the resulting Norwood corner, Basham kept the ball in play at the back post but Egan's on-target effort was blocked.

A move from right to left, involving Fleck, Duffy, Stevens and McGoldrick ended with Sharp getting to O'Connell's cross before Gerken but the skipper could not divert towards goal, and then a pass from Stevens put McGoldrick through but the striker was held up by Pennington.

United's fine start continued and Sharp was offside when he slotted home a quick free-kick and then Duffy shot from distance but Gerken comfortably saved. Ipswich's first chance, on 24 minutes, saw Spence cross for Harrison but Henderson was well placed to save the header.

Egan threatened from a corner again but his effort sailed over, as did a Sharp shot from Duffy's low cross, before Ipswich had a spell of pressure. They had a goal ruled out after a foul at a corner before opening the scoring on 38 minutes. Ipswich broke away and Basham's back-pass to Henderson was short before Baldock was robbed, resulting in HARRISON's effort deflecting off Egan's toe to loop over the Blades goalkeeper.

The goal gave the home side momentum and they won a couple of set-pieces and Nolan volleyed over before the interval.

Like in the first half, the Blades pushed Ipswich back straight from the whistle and this time the visitors were rewarded. In the same move, United whipped in two crosses and had a shot blocked - the ball nestled in the home goal when SHARP swooped to head home a Norwood cross, which dropped over Chambers. It was the least the Blades deserved.

Ipswich, though, were a threat from set-pieces, McGoldrick threw himself in front of a Sears effort from close range after Harrison headed back a Dozzell corner.

United soon got back on top. Just after the hour, Stevens side-footed into the side-netting after Ipswich cut out another cross aimed at Sharp and then a break saw Norwood almost put Baldock in but Pennington blocked. From the resulting Fleck corner, Egan headed wide at the back post.

A free-kick and a long-range effort from Sears was all the home side could manage as United continued to apply pressure. A powerful volley from Stevens was blocked by Harrison in a crowded penalty area and substitute Clarke headed over after a break and a Stevens cross.

The final Blades opportunity came in the third and final minute of added time and came from an unlikely source. Following a scruffy period of play around the Ipswich box, Egan unleashed a left-foot volley that wasn't too far away but couldn't provide United with the three points the performance deserved.
